Women with disability struggle for life with dignity in their families and society. In their struggle they are confronted with different barriers. They met in the Association of visually impaired citizens of Tuzla on final event of the campaign “Silent”, implemented by My right – office in Sarajevo. The aim of the campaign is to inform the public about the status and experiences of women with disability in our society and encourage them to talk about barriers and challenges they are confronted in their daily life.

Introductory presentation of social worker Tima Halilovic with the topic of the position of woman with disability in the family was very good. Through out real situations she presented image which is far from positive. One of the reason is that family do not have appropriate support. They don’t know how to behave when they get the child with disability. Their children are often protected or stray by them. High level of protection has negative influence on self-confidence of girls and women with disability. Their parents work for them things which they can do. That way they make them dependent.

The most of participants took part in the discussion. They talked about relations of society. Address stuff in institutions to assistants as women with disability are not present offend their dignity. Yong visually impaired woman pointed out how doctors in health institutions ask her mother what’s the matter with hear instead to address to her. Some of them were confronted with problem of getting medical certificate for the faculty or work. They consider that stuff in institutions need education how to approach to persons with disability.

Thay also talked about program of empowerment of gilrs and women in the Association.

Struggle for more powerful voice and dignified life of women with disability will be continued after the end of the campaign. One of the steps is their participation in decision making in the family and organizations where they are active. They know better what they need than men who usually make decisions..
